Gen Z grew up with a phone in hand and a browser tab always open. It would be easy to assume that means Black Friday, for them, is an entirely digital event. But the truth is more nuanced, according to our latest Black Friday & Cyber research.

Brands with a physical footprint, the storefront isn’t a legacy channel to phase out. It’s still one of the best ways to win this generation's attention and spend.

Gen Z Wants Instant Gratification

Digital-first doesn’t mean digital only.

According to our research, more than half of students plan to discover deals for the season in-store rather than online. A striking number for a generation so often categorised as “screen-first.”

The top categories driving this are telling too: fashion and tech remain areas where physical retail still leads on discovery. Students want to try things on, see them up close, and get their hands on a product before they commit.

The thing is: instant gratification doesn’t always correlate to a quick checkout.

The Power of IRL Experiences

If discovery starts in-store, purchase intent follows it there.

Retailers should lean into this new hunger for in-person engagement and in-store shopping.

Exclusive in-store offers, live events, and location-specific promotions give students a reason to show up rather than just scroll past an ad. Brands that treat their stores as an experience are the ones capturing this demand.

The experience goes beyond the four walls of a shop

Students Are On-Campus, In Store, and Talking to Each Other.

Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful discovery channels for this generation. Our data shows 41% of students rely on friends and family to surface the best deals. A roommate’s recommendation carries more weight than a paid ad ever will

Think about what this means on a practical level: students are on campus, they’re in-store together, and they’re comparing notes in real time. A great in-store deal doesn’t just convert one customer.

Don’t Choose Online or Offline. Choose Online to Offline.

The winning strategy for Black Friday 2026 isn’t picking a lane, it’s connecting the two. Use Student Beans to drive verified student app traffic straight to your physical store.

Give students a reason to line up! A queue outside your store, filmed and shared, is a Black Friday ad campaign your customers write for you.
