Freshers' Week is two weeks of total noise. New students step onto campus and get hit from every direction: free samples, flyers, QR codes, three different student discount apps, a pop-up on every corner.
Somewhere in that chaos, they're quietly deciding which brands they'll actually rely on for the next three years.
Most brands try to shout over it. Greggs decided to drive straight through it.
At Pion, we help brands like Greggs show up at exactly this moment. Not louder, but smarter. Here's how one branded bus and two university campuses turned into one of the strongest Freshers activations of the year.
Freshers' Season: The Days That Decide The Next Three Years
Freshers' Week is the single busiest stretch in the student marketing calendar, and also the most important. Our own research shows 92% of students say campus events are where they find new brands worth trying, and 80% will pick a brand offering an ongoing student discount over a one-off deal. In other words, this isn't about getting noticed once. It's about being the brand students choose to stick with.
For marketing teams working with lean budgets and leaner headcounts, that's a tall order. You can't out-shout every brand on campus. You have to out-show-up them and then prove to leadership that it worked.
One Bus, Two Cities, Hundreds of Students

On the 6th and 8th October 2026, Greggs and Student Beans took over the University of Liverpool and the University of Edinburgh with a fully branded Greggs bus tour. No queuing for a voucher buried in an email. Students simply showed up.
On site, they could win Greggs gift cards from £10 up to £50, grab merch, or walk away with everyday wins like phone stands, highlighters and stress balls. A quick QR code scan unlocked a Greggs student discount straight through the Student Beans app, and students who downloaded the Greggs app on the spot got an extra reward for doing it.
The whole thing was built around action, not just awareness: turn up, scan, download, win.
Why a Focused Activation Beats a Louder OPne
A successful activation doesn't need to be a huge-budget, nationwide blitz. Greggs' two-stop roadshow drove almost 600 event registrations through our Student Beans marketplace, handed out over 1,500 prizes and generated 84,000 impressions across app and email alone.
That reach didn't come from one channel. A solus email from Student Beans landed an almost 50% open rate, an in-app pop-up drove sign-ups ahead of the events, and vox pops filmed on the day gave the campaign a second life on social after the bus had packed up and gone home. For anyone who needs to explain what actually drove the result, not just that it worked, that kind of channel-by-channel visibility is gold — email, app and social, each doing a clearly different job, all pointing back to the same activation.
And because the whole thing ran across two cities over three days rather than a nationwide push over months, the cost of proving it stayed just as lean as the budget behind it.
More Than a Discount: Real Engagement With The Brand
It would have been easy to make this a blanket discount code and call it a day. Instead, every reward was gated behind genuine participation: turning up, scanning, downloading. That's the difference between a generic deal dumped into a crowded discount space and an activation that actually earns new, incremental attention — not just a discount handed to people who were buying anyway.
The result was a lift in brand love, awareness and engagement that a voucher code alone could never have delivered. For affiliate and partnership teams judged on quality over volume, that's the distinction that matters: a partner who can hand you an audience that's already primed to act, rather than one more discount buried among a hundred others.
The Takeaway: Show Up Before They've Chosen
Freshers' Week rewards brands that meet students in real life, on their terms, before habits have formed. Greggs didn't need the biggest budget on campus — it needed the right moment, the right mechanic and a genuinely good reason for students to stop and engage.
The brands that get this right in the first few weeks are the ones students carry with them long after term one ends.
