Freshers week lasts a matter of days, but for brands trying to win over new students, it can feel like the whole year rests on it. Timelines are tight, budgets are stretched, and students are bombarded with noise from every direction: flyers outside lecture halls, sponsored posts in their feed, endless "sign up here" emails. Cutting through takes more than a discount code. It takes a real reason for students to show up in person, and a reason to remember your brand once the Freshers fog clears.

That's the gap Student Shopping Nights was built to close, and the Leeds activation last week showed exactly how.

‍

Why Now: Scaling up Student Beans for Freshers

A few months after acquiring Student Shopping UK, Pion has turned Student Shopping Nights into a nationwide campaign, running 14 events at major shopping centres across the UK over two weeks, timed precisely to catch Freshers while new students' habits and loyalties are still being formed. Every single event carries a Student Beans activation, with three flagship dates in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle getting the full SB Universe treatment.

It's a deliberate shift from digital-only student marketing towards experiential campaigns that put brands directly in front of students at the exact moment they're most open to discovering something new, whether that's a discount code, a new app, or a new go-to brand for the year ahead.

The first major Student Shopping Night landed in Leeds last Thursday, and it set the tone for the rest of the campaign. Alongside Student Beans' own SB Universe activation, the event brought in Cult Beauty and Monzo, turning a corner of a busy shopping centre into a pop-up playground built entirely for the city's new student population.

Inside the SB Universe space, students queued up for a lock box challenge and a speed-touch game powered by Gravity, walked away with free samples from Cult Beauty, and browsed a wall of student-only discounts. The real pull, though, was the prize draws: a chance to win a MacBook Neo, or a £100 shopping spree across brands partnered with Student Beans. It was hands-on, sociable, and gave students a reason to linger rather than just walk past.

Every event, including Leeds, is bookable directly through the SB platform's newest feature, letting students discover and sign up without ever leaving the app, no Eventbrite link required. In the run-up, the Leeds date was teased across Student Beans' Instagram and TikTok channels and pushed through in-app notifications, so awareness was already building long before doors opened.

Creators such as Bella Hollamby and Leah McDonald amplified it further, documenting the night on TikTok with fast-cut, text-overlaid videos built to stop the scroll. Their videos captured what made the night work: it's free for students, it's happening in uni cities across the UK, and it's as much a chance to make new friends as it is to grab a deal.

The Benefits For Consumer Brands

Every one of those sign-ups is worth more than the moment itself. The more students sign up to Student Beans at events like Leeds, the bigger the pool of potential customers for every brand on the platform. And the more students understand what SB actually offers, the more they come back to it, discovering new brands and products long after Freshers week ends.

For partner brands, that translates into reach and awareness that a banner ad simply can't replicate, plus something harder to buy: first-party data. Every student who signs up to claim a brand discount hands over data that brands can plug straight into their own CRM, turning one night in a shopping centre into a direct line to thousands of new-to-university customers, right at the start of a spending relationship that can last for years.

How Pion Can Help

Student Shopping Nights is proof that Freshers marketing works best when it's lived, not just scrolled past. With 14 events, three flagship activations, and a platform built to turn footfall straight into sign-ups, Pion is giving brands a way into the Freshers conversation that goes far beyond a discount code, and turns one big night in Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle into a relationship that lasts the whole academic year.
