Personal finance might not be as flashy or buzz driven as fashion or entertainment, but it is vital to everyday life making it a crucial market for Gen Z. In July 2026, PION100 US surveyed 2,000 young people aged 16–24 to discover how the Gen Z markets might shift in 2027.
After scoring over 1,000 brands overall, the trends and necessities in personal finance and utilities showed incredible results about how uniquely and decisively Gen Z approaches brands' ability to cater their financial needs.
Finance and utilities are a sector that are unavoidable for any demographic, so accessing it to its full advantage is the key to being a successful practical brand. Here is how your brand can apply right to Gen Z needs and keep up with their adapting financial and personal needs.
How is Gen Z approaching personal budgeting?
The way that students finance themselves varies drastically. They are an age group that teeters between total independence to substantial familial support. Their overall spending habits are largely driven by how they can support their interests. So, understanding how they are getting the money that they are tracking is a crucial first step to strategizing how to support their needs.
- 49% of Gen Zers mostly fund themselves
- 51% of Gen Zers still receive support parents or family members
This means that about half of students are entirely responsible for watching their own spending and controlling their banking. Additionally, the other half of students who have support are still cautious of their financial status with 73% of overall students stating that they are “budgeting carefully to make their money last.”
So, students are a financially cautious consumer group that needs to watch their income and outflow closely to support their busy lifestyles.
Marketing to the diverse Gen Z demographics and market presences naturally has to mean respecting how budget conscious they are. However, the financial and utilities sector is unique because it is on the other end of students' spending. Instead of being a factor in a budget, it is the actual way that students can control their spending.
Practicality is key
Unlike more interest-based or personalized sectors like beauty or travel, finance is an aspect of nearly every person’s everyday life. So, naturally, marketing strategies for finance live largely within practically. Finance is an “I have to" category rather than "I want to." So, brands have to prioritize ease of use over buzz or identity seeking because of how important it is to student’s budgets.
In fact, students generally have negative feelings about their financial obligations. With only a 12% love score and a 12% deal seeking drive, students are not interested in fun or chic brands like they are with higher like/love scoring sectors. Instead, they are interested in the easy of use and natural integrability of finance brands into their existing financial habits.
This creates an interesting dichotomy between “need to use” and “want to use.” For something so vital to how students live, the sentiments around dealing with budgeting is remarkably low.
Brands succeed when they give students as little to do with the nitty gritty of managing their money. The less front-facing flash and effort on the consumer’s end makes the brand all the more valuable in their willingness to trust the brand with their budgeting work.
How Apple Pay is topping the game
Now that the basics of how finance functions in Gen Z life, let's look at the top brands.
Of the surveyed students the top 3 brands were:
- Apple Pay (71% like/love score)
- Cash App (69% like/love score)
- Paypal (67% like/love score)
Notably all three of these brands excel at making payment and money transfer almost seamless between individuals and banks. However, Apple stands out among them all with its unmatched contactless payment options and overwhelming brand popularity.
Gen Z is Apple Pay’s ideal market as this generation of digital natives rely on contactless payment like no generation before them. About 73% of digital wallet holders tap their phones at minimum once a week. Because of how frequently Gen Z uses their phones and Apple's already dominating presence in the technology industry, Apple has successfully built their brand on ease and dependability.
Apple excels at making payment as simple as a single button and the services rarely fail. This is the perfect combination for Gen Z as they seek seamless and woriless ways to maintain their money. If the process of using their money requires no additional effort, it is the perfect source of security for Gen Z’s fast paced and low effort mentalities around utilities. Apple drives the financial industry by making their services a natural part of daily life. Because of how prevalent iPhone usage is and the seamless tapping system, Apple has relied on habit as their advertising. So, in return Gen Z has become reliant on Apple Pay’s ease of use and seemingly invisible effort in their daily finances.
Key facets to success in Gen Z finance
With Apple Pay’s leadership in mind, there are two clear ways to help your brand excel at gaining Gen Z’s loyalty:
- Offer support, not work: Gen Z loves to feel that a brand is their ally and understands them. The last thing a busy university student wants to handle is a difficult banking situation. Offering services that require little to no action on the student’s end is ideal to keep up with the often inconsistent and overwhelming college lifestyle. The best way to earn initial loyalty is to give Gen Z the feeling that your brand can support their budgeting and tracking needs without constant monitoring. Giving them more work would defeat the purpose of having a service to help.
- Build trust through dependability: Money is one of the most important issues for any consumer, no matter their age. Being able to trust a brand to watch over their money is crucial for a brand's success. The best way to build trust is to simply make your service as dependable as it is easy. Rely on consistent formats and clear receipts when dealing with budgeting and transactions. Young consumers do not want to be watching every aspect of their service’s functioning. Rather, they want to feel like you can take care of their money without their help. So, ensure that consumers can see that the service is working for them while giving them space to breathe.
